He may not be the most illustrious former president, but Rutherford Hayes has the oldest presidential library in the states created in his honour.

The Rutherford B Hayes Presidential Libraries and Museums are inside Hayes’ former estate at Spiegel Grove in Fremont. There’s 25 acres of park, with the former president’s tomb in amongst it, but the real reason to visit is to get a taste for the Gilded Age at the main museum. As with all of these presidential libraries, there’s a lot about the president’s life and work, but it doubles as a snapshot of the era.

Thomas Edison, who invented seemingly everything, was born in Milan, Ohio, back in 1847. His birthplace is now a museum, with lots of family mementos, documents and early inventions.

But the guided tours of the Edison Birthplace Museum are worth taking to get a better idea of the inventor’s character, and how he was equal parts businessman and creator.
