Phoenix to Kingman AZ

Planning a Phoenix to Kingman road trip itinerary

The Phoenix to Kingman drive takes you from the capital of Arizona to a classic Route 66 town.

A stay in Phoenix is at its best when you explore the surrounding Sonoran Desert. That might be in a hot air balloon flight, on an ATV tour or on a guided sunset hiking adventure. You can also do day tours along the Apache Trail.

For other Phoenix experiences, try a downtown food tour, a street art tour or a spooky nighttime ghost walk.

Attractions that you might wish to buy advance include cell phone-friendly tickets for include Phoenix Zoo, the Sea Life aquarium or a drunk Shakespeare performance.

For Phoenix accommodation options with a bit of character, try the art-splashed Foundre or the resort-like Raintree at Phoenix South Mountain Preserve.

A lot of people drive straight though Kingman, either on Route 66 or turning off for Grand Canyon West.

It’s a good base for tours, though. Experiences from Kingman include a day trip taking in the Grand Canyon and the ancient Joshua tree forest. Another combines the Oatman mining village, burros and top Route 66 views. A third focuses on desert wineries, distilleries and breweries.

Attractions in Kingman itself include the Arizona Route 66 Museum and the Mohave Museum of History and Arts.

If looking for Kingman accommodation, try the Wayfarer’s Inn and Suites or the La Quinta.

Phoenix to Kingman road trip attractions: The Joshua Tree Parkway

Between Wickenburg and Wikieup, the US-93 is unofficially known as the Joshua Tree Highway. The spiky desert plants are plentiful along this stretch of the highway, and there are several good spots to pull over for photos with imposing desert rocks behind them.

Best stops between Phoenix and Kingman: Kaiser Hot Spring

Some hot springs get dollied up and turned into a luxurious bathing area. That is not the case for the Kaiser Hot Spring near Wikieup AZ. The spring feeds a small, rocky pool that’s big enough for a couple of people to get in and not much more. But it still makes for a nice reward after the 1.5 mile walk through Warm Spring Canyon.

Phoenix to Kingman drive: Alpacas of the Southwest

Alpacas of the Southwest is a ranch to the east of Kingman. As the name suggest, alpacas live here. Visitors are able to get up close to the alpacas and feed them, while the on-site shop sells socks made from alpaca wool.
