The Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge is primarily of interest to birdwatchers and hunters. More than 290 animal species have been spotted within the refuge, many of which are usually rare in Indiana.

If you’ve plenty of time, walking the Chestnut Ridge Trail will give you the best chance of spotting the birds and other wildlife. If not, the Visitor Center gives a good overview.

Louisville to Indianapolis road trip attractions: Brown County State Park

The ravines of Brown County State Park were created by glacier meltwater. If picking just one walk, make it the 0.75 mile Ogle Hollow Nature Preserve Trail, where you can see rare yellowwood trees.

The park’s focal point is the Abe Martin Lodge, which has a swimming pool and small water park, although the Nature Center is the best bet for understanding the natural environment.

The best views, however, come from the top of the 90ft Fire Tower.

Louisville to Indianapolis drive: Freedom Springs Greenwood Aquatics Park

In the southern Indianapolis suburb of Greenwood, Freedom Springs is somewhere between a leisure centre and a water park. There are several water slides, a lazy river and a splash play area for smaller children.

Throw in a lily pad crossing, lap pool and diving boards, and Freedom Springs should keep the family entertained for a little while.
