Fredericksburg to Washington DC drive: National Museum of the United States Army

The National Museum of the United States Army in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, is partly about honouring the nation’s soldiers. But it also looks at the role of the army, both in founding and securing the state, and global conflicts.

It’s a big place, and you shouldn’t expect too many light-hearted touches, but there should be at least something to engross most visitors. Entry is free.

Fredericksburg to Washington DC road trip attractions: DEA Museum

In Arlington, the DEA Museum is the Drug Enforcement Agency’s attempt to educate everyone that drugs are very bad.

But it’s more interesting than you might imagine, telling a (somewhat one-sided) history of drug use. It flits from 60s psychedelics, to the 1980s crack influx via 19th century opium dens.

There are also eye-opening sections on smuggling operations, and the ingenious methods of getting drugs into the US that have been rumbled by enforcement officers.

Attractions between Fredericksburg and Washington DC: Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery is the US’ cemetery for its war dead, and more than 400,000 military personnel and their dependents are buried here.

It’s also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with its elaborate changing of the guard ceremony. There’s also the Space Shuttle Challenger Memorial and John F Kennedy’s Grave, plus Arlington House – home of Confederate general Robert E Lee.

Arguably the best way of getting around is on the Arlington Cemetery Hop-On, Hop Off tour, but you can also do a walking tour.
