To the west of the I-35, the Waco Mammoth National Monument is home to the biggest ice age Columbian mammoth fossil find anywhere in the world. The skeletons of 16 mammoths – a nursery herd – were found her in an archaeological dig that started in 1978.

The Brazos River runs through Waco, and the best way to see the city is on a morning or sunset boat tour. Marble Falls TX is one of the most appealing hotspots in the Hill Country. Lake Marble Falls is the obvious highlight, with fishing, boating and kayak hire all on the menu.

The Falls on the Colorado Museum covers local history and the natural environment and Dead Man’s Hole is a quirky if somewhat gruesome cave. The bodies of Union sympathisers were dumped here during the Civil War.
