Augusta to Atlanta drive: Hard Labor Creek State Park

Hard Labor Creek State Park near Rutledge, Georgia, is best known for its golf course. But come the summer months, the real highlight is the lakeside beach.

If you fancy being more active, there are 24 miles of trails for walkers and horse riders. You can stay overnight in the campground and cottages, too.

The Hard Labor Creek Observatory, a professional astronomy facility, is also inside the park. It opens to the public on select nights between March and October.

Best stops between Augusta and Atlanta: Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area

The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area to the east of Atlanta covers 40,000 acres, with two massive granite outcrops the focal points. Biking, fishing and geocaching are all fairly popular here, but most visitors come for the hiking trails.

The Arabia Mountain PATH, covering more than 30 miles, links several of these trails together. But if just picking one, make it the 1.3m walk to the top of Arabia Mountain, which offers 360 degree views.
