Abilene to Fort Worth road trip: Distance, drive time & best stops

Planning an Abilene to Fort Worth road trip itinerary

The Abilene to Fort Worth drive connects two of the biggest cities in Texas.

The first port of call for many visitors in Abilene TX is Frontier Texas, a museum about life in the Old West. Unlike many dreary local history museums, Frontier Texas uses state of the art technology to be as interactive as possible, and the scope is much grander than the immediate local region.

The other really interesting attraction in Abilene TX is the National Center For Children’s Illustrated Literature, which collects the original artwork from beloved children’s books.

Fort Worth fully embraces its status as a cow town, with the Stockyards district full of cowboy heritage. And cowgirl heritage, as the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame shows off.

It’s also a place that knows how to have a shamelessly good time, with Billy Bob’s Texas Honky Tonk famously big on the yee-has and line dancing.

Other good Fort Worth experiences include a Stockyards food tour, electric bike BBQ tours, historic pub crawls and ghost tours

If you want a Fort Worth hotel with character, try the Stockyards Hotel or the Sinclair.

Best stops between Abilene TX and Fort Worth TX: Cisco TX

Cisco TX was where the Hilton hotel empire began in 1919. The first hotel owned by Conrad Hilton is now the centerpiece of the Conrad N. Hilton Community Center and Memorial Park.

Also in Cisco is the Old Zoo Nature Trail, an easy walking route which passes through the ruins of a former zoo. It’s one of the stranger walks you’ll tackle in Texas, with the crumbling zoo buildings being steadily overtaken by nature.

Abilene to Fort Worth drive: The Big Can of Soup

Andy Warhol took a humble can of soup, and replicated it over and over again. Eastland TX, however, takes a different approach. In true Texan style, here the can of soup is just really, really big.

The Big Can of Soup is one of those delightfully silly roadside attractions that is little more than a photo opportunity.

Abilene to Fort Worth road trip attractions: Weatherford TX

Weatherford’s top lure is Chandor Gardens, which combines Chinese architecture with formal English-style landscaped gardens.

The city also has a handful of decent historical attractions, including the Doss Heritage and Culture Center. This covers local history, while the Museum of the Americas has collections from across the American continents.
