Norwich to Cambridge road trip stops: Thetford

There’s plenty to see and do in Thetford. At the drier end of the scale, there’s the Charles Burrell Museum, which is all about traction engines and other industrial machinery. More fun is the Dad’s Army Museum, which celebrates the beloved, long-running British sitcom.

More importantly, though, Thetford is on the cusp of Thetford Forest, which offers a wealth of walking trails. It’s also where you’ll find the treetop ropes course of Go Ape Thetford.

For a small town museum, the Mildenhall Museum is surprisingly interesting. It covers plenty of local history, including the role the Mildenhall air base played in World War II.

It also has replicas of the Mildenhall Treasure, a series of highly valuable finds from Roman Britain that is now housed in the British Museum, London.

But the star attraction of the Mildenhall Museum is the Lakenheath Warrior – an Anglo-Saxon warrior chief who was found buried with his horse at the Lakenheath military base.

Newmarket is the centre of England’s horse racing industry, so it’s only fitting that the National Horse Racing Museum is found here. It looks at the origins of the sport, how things are done differently worldwide and acts as a hall of fame for British racing greats.

You can also do a behind-the-scenes Newmarket horse racing tour. This visits the National Stud and the Newmarket Gallops, where the racehorses get their daily workout.
