Most visitors content themselves with strolling around the impressive gardens, however.

Lotherton Hall is a grand country house in Aberford, West Yorkshire. The Edwardian Hall has a reasonable collection of art and other treasures inside, but the grounds are the real winner.

The Askham Bryan Wildlife and Conservation Park is a relatively new zoo on the outskirts of York. It’ll probably need a little time to see how it develops, but it offers close-up animal experiences and specialises in catering to children.
