Best stops on a Doncaster to Sheffield road trip: Conisbrough Castle
Built on top of a limestone hill, Conisbrough Castle dates back to the 11th century. The 19 metre-tall keep is the centrepiece, and it hosts a small museum-ish section about life here in the 12th century.
There’s more about the castle’s history in the Visitor Centre, where you’ll also find models of the castle to get a better idea of the thoughts behind the design.
Doncaster to Sheffield drive: Clifton Park, Rotherham
The Clifton Park Museum isn’t particularly interesting, but Clifton Park itself is great for letting the kids have a run around. There’s a massive, sprawling children’s play area, a mini golf course and a miniature train.
Most attention, however, tends to go to the fairground, which has plenty of rides and a splash park.

The Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham is one of those fun, button-pushing science museums, where kids can learn about physics while playing with water and diggers.
However, it is much more than that. Magna is inside one of the biggest steelworks ever built. The hulking behemoth of a building is an attraction in itself, and much of the old industrial equipment is left in place. This is brought to life during a spectacular sound and light show.
Other highlights of Magna are the massive playground and water splash park outside.
