Bradford to Sheffield by car: Distance, drive time & best stops

Finding things to do between Bradford and Sheffield

The Bradford to Sheffield drive connects two of the biggest cities in Yorkshire.

The best things to do in Bradford include the Bradford Industrial Museum, which has a particularly heavy focus on the textile industry and steam power. Also worth visiting is the World Heritage-listed Saltaire, a planned town based around the vast Salt’s Mill. The mill itself is now an art, shopping and dining complex with a large collection of works by David Hockney.

Interesting Sheffield activities include outdoor escape games, learning about the city’s past and culture on a private walking tour and treasure hunts with cryptic clues.

Bradford to Sheffield distance and driving time

By car, the distance from Bradford to Sheffield is 44 miles. This makes for a driving time of around one hour and five minutes, traffic permitting. This is going along the quickest route, which is usually via the M62 and M1.

The best stops to add to a Bradford to Sheffield road trip are Oakwell Hall, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Magna.

Bradford to York drive: Oakwell Hall

Oakwell Hall is a key stop on the Bronte trail around West Yorkshire. Charlotte Bronte stayed here in the 1830s, and it later became Fieldhead in her novel, Shirley.

This Elizabethan manor house is Grade I Listed and supposedly haunted. It is furnished to look as it would have done in the 1830s, and the country park outside has nature trails and period gardens.

Bradford to Sheffield road trip attractions: Yorkshire Sculpture Park

A short distance from Junction 38 of the M1, between Barnsley and Wakefield, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a large open space with woodland, walking trails, cutesy bridges and plenty of sheep.

Interspersed amongst this are more than 100 sculptures and art installations, including many by internationally-revered artists such as Antony Gormley, Jaume Plensa and Henry Moore.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park manages to marry the peaceful and the playful.

Attractions between Bradford and Sheffield: Magna Science Adventure Centre

The Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham is one of those fun, button-pushing science museums, where kids can learn about physics while playing with water and diggers.

However, it is much more than that. Magna is inside one of the biggest steelworks ever built. The hulking behemoth of a building is an attraction in itself, and much of the old industrial equipment is left in place. This is brought to life during a spectacular sound and light show.

Other highlights of Magna are the massive playground and water splash park outside. Branch off the M1 at Junction 34.
